“Because We Can” is a meaningful digital art piece which was composed using a digital art medium, procreate. Many layers, full of details were put together to result with three hands that signify the diversity in the groups of CCSBC and the collaboration, cooperation and teamwork aspect of the groups. The earth held up by the hands signify how each of the cohorts cooperatively worked together to create a more sustainable British Columbia which ultimately, was creating a more sustainable world. The leaves along the top are present to host the important words that I believe represent the CCSBC community. My inspiration for this art piece comes from the experience I had from being in the Fraser Valley CCSBC cohort and what it meant for me. The name of this art piece, “Because We Can” comes from the fact that we all can make a difference, we can work towards creating a more sustainable future and be part of the solution.

This is an art piece that was composed with multiple detailed layers on a digital art medium known as procreate. This piece is inspired by a field trip my cohort had to the Abbotsford-Mission recycling depot. At the depot we were given a detailed tour and were given explanations for how everything works such as the process of recycling at the depot. One of the things I found very interesting was the amount of garbage they have to sort through the recycling. We were informed that one of the main reasons for the large amount of garbage in the recycling is due to the language barriers present in the community. Those barriers make it complex for individuals in our amazingly diverse community to understand what can and what can not be recycled. Therefore, the left side of the art piece represents the employees at the depot sorting through the recycling while the right side of the art piece represents the confusion of the residents while recycling due to the language barriers present.

About the author:

Ashley Grewal is an artist who has explored various art styles throughout her lifetime, she finds most interest in creating acrylic paintings and watercolor paintings, however, recently she has been experimenting with digital art as well. She is self taught and is currently a high school student who is very involved in her school as well as her community. Her art is mostly inspired by her experiences, nature and worldwide issues. Furthermore, she hopes to continue to express herself by doing art throughout her life even if it doesn’t directly apply to her future career. She states, “To me doing art doesn’t feel like any type of work, I don’t feel forced to do it. Instead it’s a way for me to distress, relax and get lost in my thoughts.” She has had her art showcased previously in art exhibitions such as the Anonymous Art Show hosted by the Abbotsford Arts Council in late 2021.
